Segment Management

Last updated: 16th June 2025

The Segments feature in Ten Kites allows you to use different names or descriptions for the same menu item across various web menus, without needing to create separate versions for each location (not based on a specific location (Unit) or format (Output)).

This gives you flexibility to tailor how items are presented for different parts of your organisation.

For example, you might have internal categories like Prestige, Premium, or Classic. If the same dish appears across these segments but needs to be described slightly differently, segments make that possible.

You can set up and manage segments directly in the Ten Kites Portal to suit your organisation’s structure and communication style, keeping your menus flexible and relevant for different audiences.

Creating A Segment

User Roles: If you’re an organisation, portal or developer admin, you can manage segments by clicking on Admin in the menu panel, then select Segments.

  • To create a new segment, select the ‘Add Segment’ button.
  • To remove a segment, it must not be assigned to a unit.

Assigning A Segment To A Unit

To assign a segment to a unit, go to the Edit Segment screen:

Choose the unit from the Units tab (including all associated Menu Groups) dropdown list:

Define Segment Override For Menu Item

  • You can set a custom name and description for a menu item specific to a segment, if needed.
  • This applies to both local and imported menu items. To add a segment-level override, go to: Edit Mode > Segment Override tab.
  • If a name or description override is set for a segment, the system will display the overridden text in all units assigned to that segment.

Define Segment Override For Menu Management

  • Just like with Segment Overrides for menu items, you can also configure a custom name and description for a specific menu tailored to a particular segment, if required.
  • To do this, follow the same steps as you would for overriding a menu item, but access the menus via Menu Management > Menus.

Display Segment Override In Output

Web/ Excel/ API Outputs (from Publish screen)

When a web menu or other output is generated from the Publish screen, the system checks if a Segment is assigned to the Unit.

If a Segment is assigned, the system will display the Segment Override (custom name/description) for the menu item instead of the original values.

For the segment override example above

Print Output (From Print module)

When you generate a PDF using the Print Module, Portal menu, or a web page print record, the system will check if a unit is selected.

If a Unit is selected, the system then uses the Segment Override for the menu item name and description (if one is defined for that segment).

If there is no unit selected, the system uses the default name and description.

Segment Overrides are applied when you preview the content in the Print tool, so you will view the correct names and descriptions before generating the PDF.

Cookbooks

Printed cookbooks and recipe cards from the Portal do not support Segment Overrides, as they aren’t linked to a specific Unit.

They are designed to be generic across the entire organisation, rather than tailored to individual Units or Segments.

Segments Usage

Each segment contains information about the unit it is assigned to, and the menu items where a segment override has been applied.

You can view this information through Admin > Segment, then opening the Segment in View Mode and clicking on the ‘Usage’ tab.

Search By ‘Segment’ Name

If a menu item has a Segment Override name, it becomes part of the item’s searchable name.

This means you can use the override name to search for the menu item from Menu Items > Search:
