New Qatar Food Labelling Requirements

An initiative to regulate data relating to food menus of restaurants and cafes has been launched
23rd Aug 2018

The Ministry of Economy and Commerce in cooperation with the Ministry of Public Health launched an initiative to regulate the provision of information of foods and beverages served in restaurants and cafes.

The initiative ensures that restaurants, cafes and kitchens display
  • The type of the meal and the country of origin of the meal and if the meal consists of meat or poultry
  • A description of the condition of the ingredient - fresh, chilled or frozen
  • The amount of the meal including the weight of the meal component

Food outlets that are part of a multinational franchise are also be expected to provide calorie information for the meals and beverages they serve. Calorie information should be provided next to the meal type and country of origin.

An implementation phase for restaurants, cafes and similar outlets to adjust their status and include relevant information on menus was kicked off on June 10th, 2018.
The mandatory phase starts on December 10th, 2018.
