What is lupin allergen labelling?

Mandatory declaration of the allergen lupin will begin for Australia and New Zealand on 26th May 2018. Lupin is a legume which belongs to the same plant family as peanuts and has the potential to be an allergen.

Lupin was added to the list of allergens that must be declared on food labels in 2017 and food businesses were given 12 months to meet these requirements.

Any foods that contain lupin — even those already on shelves — must declare it on the label from 26th May 2018.

Information on allergens must always be displayed in connection with the food or provided to the purchaser if requested, even if the food is not in a package — for example, food prepared at and sold from a takeaway shop.
